A neck or back injury can cause paralysis and other debilitating conditions. It is crucial that an orthopedic injury victim receive proper emergency care following the accident.
The most common causes of neck and spinal injuries are:
- Slip and fall accidents
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Falling objects
- Construction accidents
The majority of orthopedic injury cases tend to occur one of two ways:
Contact Injury
Rapid Acceleration/Deceleration
Contact Injury
Orthopedic injury often occurs after a slip and fall where a person’s body strikes the ground. Depending upon the way in which the fall occurred and what area of the body is struck, significant injuries can occur. Goldblatt & Associates, P.C. represents slip and fall victims who sustain these types of debilitating injuries. From poor lighting to uncleaned spills, uneven flooring, and failure to install handrails, a property owner or manager may be held liable for unsafe conditions. The attorneys at Goldblatt & Associates, P.C. investigate premises liability claims. Read more in our Premises Liability section.
Rapid Acceleration/Deceleration
It is possible to injure your neck and/or back without actually undergoing impact to those areas. Because the neck is comprised mostly of soft tissue, and the spinal cord is quite vulnerable, these areas can suffer harm as a result of rapid acceleration/deceleration.
This refers to the force that is created when a car traveling at a fast speed is forced to stop suddenly. As the body continues to travel at that speed only to be halted by the impact of the vehicle’s interior, the neck can suffer injury as it is yanked forward in an injury (whiplash), while the spine suffers as it is also forced into awkward movements. The discs, joints and muscles of the neck are forced beyond normal range, creating severe strain. While there may be no outward signs of injury, a car accident victim can suffer serious debilitating consequences. It is important to have the neck and back areas X-Rayed after an accident as symptoms may not show for a few days.
The Aftermath of an Orthopedic Injury
Damage from a neck or back injury may be temporary, but most serious accident victims will face ongoing medical problems and long-term consequences.
The effects of a spinal injury depend on where exactly the impact occurred. Debilitating effects of neck and back injuries include:
- Broken bones
- Quadriplegia or paraplegia
- Loss of sensation and motor functioning
- Loss of bowel/bladder control
- Fertility problems
- Inability to regulate blood pressure
- Reduced control of body temperature
- Chronic pain
- Loss of breathing control
- Reduced neck mobility
